Manipur is a beautiful state in South India with many tourist attractions such as the historic Buddhist monasteries at Angkor Wat, the golden sands of Andaman, and the world famous Manipur beach, the shores of which are covered with turquoise and a number of other vibrant colours of marine life. So it is no surprise that there are many people who plan to go to Manipur in search of the perfect time to spend their vacations. A popular event in this state is the annual Manipur Matka Festival where children get a chance to win gifts, including everything from money to laptops, jewellery and many more.

This festival, which began as a small celebration to honour the elders of a local fishing village, soon became a focal point for tourists and a major draw to northern Indian tourism. The festival began with celebrations and games in honour of Lord Muraleya, Lord Krishna and Goddess Lakshmi. On the auspicious occasion of Veli Purna (January), the festivities begin with the 'Dahi Handi' competition at the local golf course. All contestants prepare a hand-made dish made out of rice paper, silk and decorated with sand to represent the Sun God. Veli Purna Day also marks the beginning of Manipur sangai tourism and thousands of tourists from all over India flock to the region to take part in the competition. The competition is fierce between the various demographically different contestants but the local administration always offers generous gifts to the winning child.

It is typical of Manipur that whatever the occasion is, the city sees a huge crowd turn up to watch the competition. The Manipur Day celebrations on the 7th day of the Monsoons are perhaps the biggest event of the year. There is a buzz in the region and entire rivers have been set apart to celebrate the occasion. The local administration puts the local people through a rigorous screening process to ensure that the people coming to participate do not have any criminal record or be affiliated with any terrorist outfit.

Manipur is also known for the rich tradition of music, dance and literature and as such has developed a plethora ofanchor arts, including the regional Kuchi Sankranti manipur day, which is the largest in Asia and is performed in the scenic Meghalaya High School. The annual Manipur cultural programme is organized to celebrate the cultural and ethnic heritage of Manipur and as such includes a visit to Meghalaya, its villages, towns and national parks. On this day, families and students from all over India come to Meghalaya to take part in the cultural programme.

One of the major highlights of Manipur cultural programme is the performance of the classical art of Meghalaya, which forms the crux of the Manipur cultural programme. The performances are conducted by a number of talented young artists and choreographers who take turns performing a sequence of traditional dances and acts in a grand scale. The performance includes 'Nandim's Lament', 'Durga Puja', 'Koniss Manali' and many other traditional cultural acts. All of the above are conducted in an open air auditorium.

The festival draws huge numbers of tourists to Manipur during the month of April and May, when the world famous 'Chollom Beach Festival' takes place. On this day, many local people visit the scenic Chollom Beach to take part in the celebrations and to get the first glimpse of Mother Nature. They line up on the shoreline to form a ring in the sand and clap and cheer as the deities, mostly Goddesses in Chollom, carry out a paean to her. The festival concludes with a massive celebration feast in the open air auditorium, where the gifts and garlands of Goddesses are exchanged and the dance performance of the local artists is carried out.
